Valley hospital commemorates organ donation through an honor walk

Rio Grande Valley hospitals are now taking part in a movement to honor patients who have agreed to give up their organs.

The honor walk brings together the doctors, nurses and the patient’s family for a walk through the hospital hallways.

At the end of the walk, those organs are removed from the body to be used to save another life.

George Godinez was the first person in the Rio Grande Regional Hospital’s history to be celebrated through an honor walk. The family made the decision to donate his organs through the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance.

Edwina Garza, spokesperson for the organization also known as TOSA, says these walks are significant, especially because of the lack of organ donations in the Valley.

Garza says about 4,000 people in central and south Texas are waiting for organ transplants.
